A full understanding of the electric and magnetic fields inside matter can be obtained only after the atomic nature of matter is appreciated. Hence we have used elementary atomic concepts freely in the development of macroscopic theory. The Second Edition is to introduce two new areas which we felt should be included to meet our objectives for a text at the intermediate level. These are an introduction to the special theory of relativity, particularly as it affects electromagnetic phenomena, and a brief introduction to the electrodynamics of superconductivity.
